The flat, spreading top of a cumulonimbus cloud, which often has the shape of an anvil. Thunderstorm anvils can spread hundreds of kilometers in the wind direction away from the thunderstorm. Sometimes the anvil also spreads towards the wind, which is then called a back-sheared anvil.
